Raising Cancer Awareness

At Cancer Care Diaspora, we promote and protect the health of the public through provision of information and raising of public understanding of the nature, causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment of all forms of cancer and we also provide practical support to people affected by cancer.

Both African and African Caribbean women have a lower knowledge of the signs of breast cancer than
white women.

Only 65% of BME women compared to 73% of white women thought cervical screening is a necessary
health test.

Incidence rates of prostate cancer for African and African Caribbean men are around twice as high as
the rates for white men.

Cancer Rates Among BME Communities

Breast cancer occurring at a younger age, and as a more aggressive tumour type, among black women of African and Caribbean descent.

Women from BME communities appear to have a lower uptake of cancer screening services than those from the general population.

Evidence suggests that BME communities have unmet need relating to the provision of cancer information. This has resulted in lower awareness of cancer risk factors, signs and symptoms and cancer services among BME communities.

Impact in BME Communities

Lower cancer awareness levels and lower levels of take up for screening services by BME communities is leading to both more advanced disease and poorer survival levels.

Cancer patients known to be black were diagnosed with breast cancers with a worse prognosis than those in other ethnic groups. Their breast tumours were significantly larger, of higher grade, more likely to be node positive.
